Squadar

Saturday, 22:10. Two sets you wanted overlap, the site map is a PDF and half the squad has vanished into the crowd. Squadar keeps the plan, the place and your people on one screen.

01 / The brief

Squad + radar.

Squadar is a festival companion: a personal schedule that knows about clashes, a live map that knows where your friends are, and a route from the one to the other. It is built for the moments a festival actually consists of: small decisions made in the dark, in noise, with 8% battery.

Conditions on site
  1. 01Dark

Most of the weekend happens after sunset. Black backgrounds keep the screen readable and the battery alive.

  2. 02Loud

Nobody hears a notification. Anything important has to be visible, not audible.

  3. 03One hand

The other one holds a drink. Targets are large and the main actions sit at the bottom.

  4. 04Low signal

Fifty thousand phones on one cell. Positions sync in tiny payloads and the map is cached.

  5. 05No attention

You look at the phone for four seconds. Every screen answers one question: now what?

02 / The night

One night on site.

The app follows the timeline of the night itself. Each screen is the answer to the question you have at that hour.

Save the sets. See where they collide.

The personal timeline flags a clash the moment two saved artists overlap, so the hard choice happens before the gates, not in front of the stage.

03 / The squad layer

Your people, as a radar.

Location sharing is the feature the name is built on. Each squad member keeps one stable colour across map, list and radar, so you recognise a friend by their dot before you read their name. Between updates the app stays in power-save mode; Pulse is the override: one tap rings and vibrates every phone in the squad and switches everyone to live positions for sixty seconds, so even if nobody hears you, you can see where they are.

04 / The signal legend

Three colours. Three meanings.

The palette is a legend, not a mood. Lime is the only colour that means “tap this”. Cyan always points somewhere: a route, a direction, a distance. Magenta is reserved for the one thing that needs attention right now: a clash. Everything else stays grey so the three signals stay loud.

05 / Under the hood

Built for a live event, not a demo.

The app is built in Flutter with Firebase Auth, a Realtime Database for live squad positions and Cloud Functions for notifications. Maps render through MapLibre on OpenFreeMap tiles, with a custom illustrated overlay for the festival site. Design tokens live in code so colour, radius and type stay consistent while features move fast.

Status

It has to work when attention is the scarcest thing on site.

That constraint shapes every decision, from the size of the targets to the order of the tools. Squadar is in development; this case documents the current build.
